What is In-Home Care?

In-home care services are non-medical and primarily help older adults with activities of daily living and personal care. The main goal of home care is to keep someone safe and comfortable in their own home.

The assistance of home care aides allows many elderly adults to remain at home when they are not ready to relocate to a residential care community. It’s also a good option for those who just need some assistance and are otherwise independent, as the amount of care can be personalized for each individual’s needs, from one afternoon per week to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are benefits for aging adults who have home care, including:

Staying in their own home – This is is the ideal solution for loved ones who want to age in place, and benefit from having a caregiver with them in order to ensure their safety while bringing peace of mind to them and their family members.

Security– From long-term health problems to dementia, some aging adults have illnesses that put them at risk for falls, wandering, or forgetfulness. Having a 24/7 plan of care can give you the peace of mind to know that your senior is safe at all times.

Socialization /Activities – Some aging adults have a hard time doing the things they love without assistance. An in-home caregiver can assist your senior to live a life they love by helping with activities and socialization.

Giving the Family Caregiver a Break– We know you love your senior family member, but you don’t have to do everything by yourself. Let our in-home caregivers be your 24/7 eyes and ears to alleviate family caregiver stress.

What Services Are Offered by Senior Home Care Organizations?

While each company may offer slightly different services, you can generally expect one or more of the following types of home care:

Companion care provides companionship, light housekeeping, cooking, transportation, help with errands, and other basic caregiving tasks.

Personal care offers the benefits of companion care plus assistance with activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, feeding, and toileting.

Respite care provides a break for people who otherwise care for their loved ones full-time. That may be for a few hours each day while the primary caregiver works or a few days at a time if the primary caregiver goes out of town.

Home health care includes things like nursing, medication management, physical therapy, speech therapy, and other medical care. While some home care organizations also offer home health care, many do not.

How Do I Know if My Loved One Needs In-Home Care?

Although the signs will look different for everyone, here are a few signs that your loved one may benefit from home care:

  • Reduced mobility
  • Inability to drive
  • Falls or other injuries or accidents
  • Decreased muscle mass or other weight loss
  • Increased forgetfulness
  • Unkempt home, dirty clothing, poor personal hygiene
  • Isolation or signs of loneliness

What is In-Home Personal Care?

Often referred to as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) or Instrumental Activities of Daily Life (IADLs), they can provide enough assistance for individuals who require critical day-to-day tasks outside their ability without compromising a sense of independence and dignity often found at home.

A personal care service is any type that assists with everyday activities like:

  • brushing teeth,
  • dressing,
  • bathing,
  • grooming,
  • toileting,
  • incontinence care,
  • shaving,
  • eating, and more.

Usually needed on an intermittent basis due to its nature, this may be all it takes for somebody whose needs exceed what family members could reasonably offer but don’t warrant assisted living facilities yet.

In-Home Personal Care services are the hands-on help you need to stay in your own home longer.
